Core Games

Notes

  • At all times your trying to get knees to chest and get a connection of your elbows to your knees
  • When you are trying to create the space between the yourself and your opponent, you are to push with the elbows and shoulders
  • The idea is that your elbow should be on the floor
  • Where you want elbow to knee connection is the how you’ll determine the location of your own knees in relation to your opponent and as a result where the kip will take place

Game 1

  • Starting Position

      0 - You’ll be on your side
      1 - With the side that is against the floor, connect knee to elbow
      2 - One hand on the lat of your opponent
      3 - The other foot which is not being used for knee to elbow should be used to maintain connection into a person’s
 
  • Objective
    • Top Player
      • Your goal is to get chest to chest connection and shoulder to cheek connection to turn your opponent’s face away from you
    • Bottom player
      • Your goal is to get into a more dominant position (side control, mount, back-take) by either using sweeps or wrestling up
      • Optional → A rule could be added here to say that the person on bottom should not be able to go to turtle. This ensures the bottom player is always on the search for a more dominant position

Game 1-a

  • Starting position

0 - Person on bottom will be on their side
1 - Connect knees to elbow on the side which is against the floor
2 - Connect knees to elbow on the side that is in the air
3 - Flex your foot as far back as it can, place it into the crease of your opponent’s knee. For the other foot place it into the thigh (or wherever you find provides more control of your opponent)
 
  • Objective
    • Top Player
      • Your goal is to get chest to chest connection and shoulder to cheek connection to turn your opponent’s face away from you
    • Bottom player
      • Your goal is to get into a more dominant position (side control, mount, back-take) by either using sweeps or wrestling up

Game 2

  • Starting Position

      1 - The length of your forearm should be pressed against their waistline. Your other hand should be used as reinforcement

      2 - Both knees should be connected together and your thighs should be pressed against your own opponent’s thigh
      3 - Connect both feet together

Objectives

  • Top
    • Your goal is to get chest to chest contact to get your opponent’s back flat on the mats
      • if you get kipped but are able to recover ie. get side control/mount/backtake, the game continues
      • once you get chest to chest and are able to consolidate the position for 3 seconds you win and are required to reset the position
  • Bottom
    • Your goal is to use the kipping escape to remove the opponent on top
      • If you sweep the top player or get into a dominant position you win the game and are required to reset the position

Game 3

  • Starting position → Full mount

      Guidelines for the person on top
      1 - Shoulder to cheek connection
      2 - Both feet should be connecting toe-to-toe
      3 - Hip to waist connection
  • Objective
    • Top Player
      • Maintain mount for the entire duration of the time given
      • You should look to either extend one or two hands over your opponent’s head
    • Bottom Player
      • You should use the kipping escape to remove yourself from the situation

Context Switching

Game 4

  • Top Player’s objective is to maintain mount for the duration of the time given
    • Half Guard → Side control → mount
    • Half Guard → mount
  • Bottom player’s objective is to ONLY use the kipping escape if the top player manages to get mount

Game 5

  • Starting position
    • Standing vs seated
  • Top player’s objective is to
    • Beat the legs
    • Get chest to chest contact
    • Maintain mount for the duration of the game
    • You are able to go for submissions
  • Guard passing from the standing opponent could look like
    • Guard passing sequence → side control → mount
    • Guard passing sequence → mount
  • Bottom player’s objective is to:
    • prevent the standing from getting to mount
    • if they are mounted the kipping escape should be used to escape the position
    • they are allowed to use leg entanglements to sweep your opponent
